Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies Hornblower Saga C S Forester 9780316289412 Books

Several years ago, my wife and I had read some of C.S. Forester's Hornblower books and enjoyed them so much. that we decided to start from the beginning of the series and read them all. We finally reached the end with "Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies" and were sad that there would be no more. Forester writes (wrote) superbly and even though we hardly understood the naval terminology (especially of the old sailing warships) we were caught up in the excitement created by Forester's imagination and writing.

Hornblower is not a superhero nor even a typical hero. Although brilliant in the art of warfare and even international diplomacy he can be irascible, thoughtless and impatient. Nevertheless there is much to admire. We're both happy that read the whole series in chronological order of then the events happened (which is not the same as when they are written. For that, readers will have to go on line and find the chronological order for themselves.

Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies Hornblower Saga C S Forester 9780316289412 Books Reviews

I think the stories just keep on getting better - this is the 11th and last of the formal series. It's a series of linked short stories. Each one is riveting. I highly recommend the series in general and this book in particular.
The previous book -- Lord Hornblower -- is in a sense the real end of the series, since that book brings things to the end of the Napoleonic wars. I was prepared to be disappointed by this book, especially since it seems to be harder to find than the others in the series. Was there not as much demand for it, I wondered? Was it a mere appendage to the series?

It is different, in the sense that the book is a collection of loosely linked episodes in the West Indies rather than a single narrative, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. It is good, really, that he didn't try to make a full book out of any of these individual stories. While from a naval standpoint nothing can match the drama of the Napoleonic wars, this book brings things to a satisfying personal close for Hornblower. It is the personal aspects of it that keep this book from being an afterthought and a mere appendage to the main sweep of the series.
Hornblower and the Atropus
This is the fifth book in the Hornblower Saga following Hornblower During the Crisis (Hornblower Saga) Hornblower is assigned to the twenty-two gun Atropus, a sloop of war, the smallest ship that warrants a full captain. He is assigned to go to a quiet bay in Turkey where a British ship loaded with both gold and silver has sunk in about 100 feet of water. His mission is to recover the treasure and not to alert the Turks with what is going on. He is to pick up some Ceylonese divers and their handler en route.
Naturally Hornblower demonstrates his superior nautical abilities and his deering do.
I highly recommend this book and this entire series to fans of naval adventures.

The next book is Hornblower Beat to Quarters
"Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies" is the final full-length Hornblower novel, although there are a few short stories set after this one. In this novel, Hornblower has finally made Admiral, and has been posted as Commander-in-Chief of the rather small British naval force in the West Indies. The Napoleonic Wars are over but the times are nonetheless dangerous and complicated. There are several more or less self-contained stories set in this context, and largely they are entertaining and enjoyable. During this time frame South America is in full Revolution against Spain, and of course this ends up involving our hero. In this novel C.S. Forester also evidences a keen understanding of British naval politics of the times, and this is very interesting as well.

My favorite line in this novel, which I have never forgotten, is the one in which Hornblower, now a full Admiral and feeling the full weight of responsibility for the actions of his subordinates, suddenly realizes a sympathy with the Admirals who had been his own superiors as a more junior officer. This observation is true in most walks of life and in its own way is quite profound.

This is an enjoyable Hornblower novel and if not the best of the series nonetheless is authentic Hornblower through and through. Highly recommended. RJB.
I like the Hornblower Novels, and have repeatedly read them since high school. What can I say?

Forester was a sailor, and it is reflected in his writing. He also must have done a lot of research. The details of how to work a full rigged ship are interesting. Forester also wrote a non-fiction book, The Age of Fighting Sail, which is very good. I read Mahan after that one.

The book begins with Hornblower's being put in change of the water portions of Admiral Nelson's funeral. Interesting in the details that have to be covered, including personnel, and the crises in countered in the course of a few days on land. Also gives and insight into the culture of the Court of St. James at the time.

The Atropos is a sloop of war. When it arrives at the Channel Fleet, it is used as a scout to keep watch on the French Fleet being blockaded. Lots of action on land and sea.
I just finished this last book in the twelve book Horatio Hornblower series. It is the very best series of books I have ever read. I believe it was even more enjoyable for me as I have spent much of my life on or near the water. The books are written with non-stop action and dialogue. My only regret is that I didn't get to read them all until this last year.
This book keeps up with the rest. If you liked the first books this one will not disappoint you.
Be aware the next in the series is not on kindle. Yes believe it or not there is a gap between this book and the rest of the books in the series.
